I wanted to buy a nice jewelery set for my sister at xmas time, It was on a ticket system there was someone being served and 1 person in front and only one person on the checkout. The person being served took ages looking at different rings, trying them all on, the same with the second person. It all got very frustrating I took my purchase elsewhere after standing there for 45 minutes and ran out of lunch break. I understand people want to look at the jewelery but 1 member of staff isnt sufficient at all. about 1 month ago via web
Barclays has got to be the worse, I am a finance manager and deal with many banks. The ques are not too bad, there is usually around 2-3 staff about 3 people waiting, dont know if its just me but its always the people in front of me seem to want to give their life story, whilst asking so many questions about their account taking up lots of valuable time. Some other banks I deal with have some great machines that can answer most of these queries and transfer money. about 1 month ago via web
The Royal Mail might be going through a bit of a bad patch... but overall, is it really that bad? Mail is delivered twice a day AND on Saturdays...and in general you post something and it reaches your destination.
In South Africa, we weren't so lucky. Mail arrives once a day, 5 days a week. And every time I sent or received a parcel for the last year it either never arrived or when it did (very very late) it had been opened and something stolen out of it. My gran even had a pair of socks stolen sent to her by her sister. Seriously.
I'm not saying that the Post Office in SA is entirely useless, I could just have really bad luck. My point is that the UK has a service that works - most of the time. Surely postal workers are entitled to good working conditions and have a right to strike to ensure that they get them?
The Royal Mail is generally very effective and if it takes a strike to maintain that effectiveness, then maybe we should grin and bear it. At least it is only temporary. 3 months ago via web
I read that the Royal Mail made a special effort to reduce deliveries to once a day at most, specifically to kill the twice a day post. I've had plenty go missing, but it does generally work...although, I quite frankly don't know why we don't get post on a Sunday too. 3 months ago via web
It's no wonder their volumes are falling when it's such a nightmare to post anything. Why they can't install a few electronic machines for simple postage enquiries I cannot think 3 months ago via web
Gatwick South Terminal has it's main handbaggage screening downstairs with an additional overspill security screening section upstairs, used as an expansion valve to relieve queues during busy periods. During the recent October half term, the upstairs was closed (of course because half-term HOLIDAYS are notoriously quiet periods). The queue through security took 37 minutes and 22 seconds. That's 32 minutes and 22 seconds long than necessary, Thousands of pounds of lost sales at shops in the duty free concourse. Many hundreds of passengers adding to the horror stories of Gatwick as the UK's worst airport, and everyone left wondering what will happen at Gatwick next time. Does this sound familiar...I'm sure the new owners of Gatwick airport would want to know just how bad it is. 3 months ago via web
Good point Harry, no doubt if they read your experience they will open all their screening sections to herd passengers more quickly into the duty free shopping mall !!!! 3 months ago via web
Santander branches will leave counters closed even with the largest of queues. Inane banter between staff whilst serving customers as well as dodgy cold-selling of products at the counter both add to the poor customer service 4 months ago via web
The Santander in Richmond isn't as bad as that except at lunchtime when it's a nightmare. Why can't they get a couple of temporary staff for a couple of hours at lunchtime? 4 months ago via web
Could you have a clearly identified spot in the store where you go to find help on the shop floor (thus saving the undignified scramble for a person in a purple tee-shirt). Maybe a large purple spot on the floor ? 4 months ago via web
Good idea. And/or, continuing the fun theme/meme, perhaps get a purple balloon on arrival then blow it up when you need help and wave it above your head, or release it in the direction of the nearest shirt. 4 months ago via web
Actually, my QR starts before the queue - but this is the nearest approximation I can find.
It's actually finding a queue to join. I go to the store to buy some kit, but it's not always the sort of kit you just pick off the shelf and take to the checkout. I need some help. There are a few of the purple tee-shirted folks on the shop floor, but they're usually busy with other customers - I can't find anyone to help. I go to the tills, but they can't leave the checkout and suggest I look on the shop-floor for a helper.... If I could find the queue for the helper I'd join it - I am *so* terribly English after all ! 4 months ago via web
Send Senior Managers in to work as Junior Staff in the main airport and railway station WHSmiths for a couple of days. 4 months ago via web
Gatwick.
Heathrow
Liverpool Street.
Eurostar at King's Cross.
Just four WHSmiths in my recent experience, each sharing the following characteristics:
1) My time, somewhat valuable at the best of times in my no doubt inflated opinion, is suddenly urgently constrained by something I believe they call in the trade 'timetables'
2) Your stores seem to have a monopoly or near monopoly on provision of the goods I happen to want in these places - and seem to be making a pretty good profit on that situation I would guess, going by the prices you charge, say, for a cheap disposable biro.
3) Queues. Long, long, long queues. A complete lack of any seeming management of this problem (going by the eyeball rolling and despairing sighs of staff I've talked to about this). Often, in fact, while other staff are stacking or whatever.
